Rebecca first became interested in sign language when she was in elementary school. She found a copy of the ASL alphabet and taught it to her sister and herself. They used to finger spell to each other at the dinner table, so they could hold conversations without their parents knowing what they were saying.

Many years later, Rebecca's interest in ASL was once again piqued. In her previous career as a book publicist, Rebecca worked on a book called Talking Hands, which described the research of a group of linguists who studied a remote Bedouin village that had created its own sign language. Through the book’s explanation of language development and the history of sign language, Rebecca learned a great deal about Deaf culture. It was then that she decided to teach her children Sign when she became a mother.

When her first daughter was 5 months old, Rebecca started teaching her ASL. Almost immediately her daughter was signing “milk”and “light.” Even when her daughter starting talking, the family continued to use ASL. Rebecca explains, “While at first signing was a great way for us to communicate before Samantha could talk, later it also helped us clarify words she was saying. For instance, when Samantha was 18 months old, she called her favorite stuffed animal ‘Nee.’ I would never have guessed she was asking for her bunny, if she hadn't also been signing ‘bunny.’ ASL is our Rosetta Stone!”

Five years later, Samantha is often complimented for her advanced language skills by strangers on the street.  She now has a younger sister who also signs. The two of them love to listen to and sign the My Smart Hands songs together. They go to bed listening to “Mommy's music.”

Language is a passion of Rebecca’s. She double majored in Writing Intensive English and Spanish at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI and continues her ASL studies. She is a certified My Smart Hands instructor who holds multiple certificates in American Sign Language.

Rebecca lives in Astoria and has been teaching My Smart Hands™ Baby Sign Language Classes in New York City for four years.
